Select Surfaces Laminate Reviews

The brand is divided into two categories: Woodgrain Textured and Handscraped.

Most Select Surfaces laminate is produced in Germany.

Select Surfaces Woodgrain Textured Laminate Flooring

This is a line of Select Surfaces laminate with the traditional good looks of genuine hardwood.

Colors range from light and cool Sterling and Silver Oak to rich, warm and medium-dark lines, some with a touch of red in them.

Like most Select Surfaces laminate floors, it installs easily using the patented SpeedLoc system discussed in the features section below.

Most planks are 14mm thick, which includes a 2mm pad. Those Select Surfaces woodgrain textured laminates are backed by a Lifetime warranty for homes and a 10-year light commercial warranty for businesses. There is a limited number of 14.3mm Woodgrain Texture colors with an extra-thick 2.3mm pad.

There isn't a lot of wood in laminate, but Select Surfaces claims the wood it uses is, "Responsibly sourced from certified forests."

Best used: Homeowners choose this classic-look laminate when they want the appearance of a traditional hardwood floor at a much more affordable cost.

Select Surfaces Handscraped Laminate Flooring

Select Surfaces Handscraped Laminate Flooring

The flooring in this category bears images of genuine handscraped wood.

Handscraped (aka hand-scraped and hand scraped) refers to wood planks worked with hand tools to create the proper plank thickness. It's a rougher, more rustic or Old World look than other options.

Your wood options are rich and beautiful. They include classic domestic hardwoods like Hickory and Walnut. The colors are dark and have names like Espresso and Mocha.

Select Surfaces hand-scraped laminate is available in 10mm and 14mm thicknesses. Both types have a 2mm attached pad which serves as underlayment on wood and cushions the floor when you install laminate over concrete or tile.

Both are covered by an exceptional Lifetime warranty for residential installation and a 10-year light-commercial warranty.

Best used: This flooring is relaxed yet beautiful. If your home or design scheme is Old World, country, rustic or similar, handscraped laminate is a great fit.

Select Surfaces hand-scraped laminate is popular in primary residences, vacation homes in the woods or by the lake and in man caves and similar settings.

Special Features of Select Surfaces Laminate Flooring

Here are a couple of features that help differentiate this brand from others.

SpeedLoc Design: Most laminate companies have a special, sometimes patented, design for connecting planks to one another. SpeedLoc makes installation quite quick and easy. Plus, the pad is already attached, so you can skip the step of installing the underlayment first. If you DIY the floor, it will reduce time. If you hire a pro, these features will reduce installation cost.

GreenGuard Gold: The GreenGuard Environmental Institute tests products for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are harmful pollutants that off-gas and cause exposure to chemicals. GreenGuard Gold certifies that Select Surfaces flooring is very low in VOCs. Quite a few brands are certified by GreenGuard.

Sustainability: There isn't a lot of wood in laminate, but Select Surfaces claims the wood it uses is, "Responsibly sourced from certified forests".

Select Surfaces Pros, Cons and Ratings

This section allows you to compare Select Surfaces laminate to other brands you might be considering.

Pros:

The selection is fair – similar in size to TrafficMaster and Dream Home. The three lines give you options for appearance, cost and quality. The 14mm flooring is thicker than most. Only Dream Home also has a 14mm option.

The warranties are excellent, though even quality laminate only lasts 15-25 years depending on how heavy the traffic on it is. All but one line offer 10-year commercial warranties too. Good quality and competitive cost equal good value.

Cons:

The selection is good for a small brand, but you'll find many more options from Pergo, Mohawk and Shaw.

Here are the ratings:

  • Range of color/style options: 3
  • Overall Quality: 4
  • Ease of installation: 3
  • Green/Low-VOC: 4
